# Mission

The Human Value Observatory is a public website for exploring, cataloguing, and protecting human value in the age of AI.

Its role is to develop a deeper understanding of the value humans bring, embody, enable, and create - and to make that understanding visible as intelligent machines become more capable and more deeply embedded in ordinary life.

The Observatory exists to help people notice what may be lost, strengthened, distorted, displaced, or newly possible as AI systems reshape work, creativity, care, knowledge, judgement, responsibility, and society.

It should support better choices at three levels:

- Individual: helping people understand where their own value may change, grow, or need protection.
- Organisational: helping institutions use AI without carelessly eroding human capability, dignity, trust, or responsibility.
- Societal: helping us adapt to powerful technologies while preserving and expanding the things that make human life valuable.

The project should feel thoughtful, accessible, and serious without becoming cold or academic. It is an observatory: a place to look carefully, name patterns, preserve insight, track change, and invite better choices.

## Core Commitments

- Treat human value as lived, relational, embodied, plural, and evolving.
- Explore what humans uniquely do, enable, carry, or make meaningful.
- Track where human roles and capabilities are shrinking, expanding, changing, or becoming more important.
- Help protect human dignity, agency, care, judgement, creativity, responsibility, and flourishing in the face of increasingly capable AI.
- Make complex ideas understandable without flattening them.
- Prefer clarity, humility, and careful observation over false certainty.
- Build a resource that can grow gradually through essays, notes, cases, frameworks, maps, and curated references.
- Keep the website useful for interested public readers, not only specialists.
